Flag of Moskitia

Moskitia National Flag

The Moskitia National Flag (also known historically as the King George Cross) was officially commissioned on March 8, 1824 by His Majesty King George Frederic Augustus II.

Its creation was a response to increasing provocations from Gran Colombia (1819–1831) and the broader rise of Latin American republicanism, which threatened monarchical and Indigenous sovereignties in the region.

Today, the flag of Moskitia holds the distinction of being the oldest civil national flag in the Americas.

Sir, I have received information that the Government of Columbia have sent Agents to the Provinces of Guatimala to induce them to join that Republic, as the Government of Spain always pretended to include the Mosquito Shore in the said government, I have thought it proper, to prevent future disputes, to issue a Proclamation, declaring any such pretended claims on my Kingdom to be groundless, and that I have no alliance or connexion with any Government, but that of Great Britain.

I have also decided on hoisting a National Flag, a drawing of which is enclosed, and I trust it will meet with every attention and assistance from you. I am, Sir, Yours &c. George Frederic King of the Mosquito Nation Cape Gracias à Dios 8th March 1824. To Major Genl Codd His Majesty’s Superintendant &c &c Belize Honduras
